The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching a great lesson to political leaders, policy makers and stakeholders in healthcare around the world that disruptions in the supply and quality of critical medical products at the time of a large-scale health crisis can cost many lives and cause devastating economic and social impacts.
Over the past three months that Myanmar prepared to respond to the pandemic, we wished for an effective collaboration between public and private sectors. This would have ensured the availability of quality medical products as well as the prevention of price gouging and the sale and/or promotion of substandard/falsified drugs, diagnostic supplies, protective gear, etc. The pandemic has shown us the urgency to build the trust necessary for both sectors to work together in improving national healthcare standards, which unfortunately has not occurred. This may have negatively impacted Myanmar’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and may also obstruct the country’s ability to combat future health crises.
A lack of public-private sector coordination can cause severe warehousing and distribution capacity constraints, limit the visibility of the overall supply and demand of critical items, and further impact restrictions in access caused by border closures and disruptions in transportation networks.
Coordinated efforts can bring together supply chain and logistics information to enable end-to-end tracking of pandemic response items, thereby ensuring quick and appropriate delivery of supplies where and when needed.
Amid these challenges, Sea Lion Distribution Solutions has been doing its part with staff engaged in a concerted around-the-clock effort to secure purchases from suppliers across the world, arrange inbound shipments, and ensure 24/7 climate control of warehouse facilities. We have been processing the timely delivery of orders from the Ministry of Health and Sports, hospitals and clinics from both public and private sectors, international and local donors, etc.
